St. Basil: "In the midst of the covering and veil, where the priests were allowed to enter, was situated the altar of incense, the symbol of the earth placed in the middle of this universe; and from it came the fumes of incense." (The Mystic Meaning of the Tabernacle, Bk V, Ch VI; Clement of Rome, Stromata, Bk V)

Cosmas of Indiocopleustes expands on this subject of the tabernacle being a form of the earth and the firmament is the 'veil'. Cosmas' book Christian Topography describes earth like a two story house with heaven above and the flat earth/hell below.

Man cannot penetrate the veil, although the priest mystically does so at mass.
